Purpose

To provide an environment for people to explore the Treaty of Waitangi and its implications in a safe, non-confrontational, participatory process. Although primarily for Pakeha, the workshops are open to all who wish to attend.

Programme

A broad range of issues will be examined, including those which participants raise.

  • Cultural identity; honouring our stories
  • Global Colonisation
  • Origins of New Zealand settlement; Pre Treaty New Zealand history
  • The Treaty - issues leading to it and surrounding its signing
  • Post Treaty legislation
  • Consequences of colonisation
  • Sovereignty debate
  • Waitangi Tribunal and settlements
  • Contemporary Treaty issues and implications for the future

Workshop Leader

Robert Consedine has had over twenty years experience as a Treaty educator, working in over 150 different organisations. He enjoys wide community and organisational support. As a best selling author he has also introduced this workshop process to groups in Canada.

Comments from recent Treaty Workshops

Extremely informative - factual information delivered in an interesting way with stories!

Fantastic - should be compulsory in all NZ workplaces

Brilliant workshop - well presented, full of useful information presented in an articulate manner with lots of opportunities for input - this workshop should be offered to ALL staff members

It has been challenging, well presented, interactive, inclusive. One doesn’t feel "awkward" about ideas/opinions

Lots of context - already knew some of the history but this linked it together in a way that made lots of things fall into place - especially re foreshore and seabed

Very professional. - very worthwhile. Non conflictive. Safe.

The best Treaty workshop that I’ve done. Comprehensive, inclusive, time to reflect, excellent presentation.
